Do Green Tea Shots Have Green Tea in Them?

Is there green tea in green tea shots? The burning question that we’ve all been asking…To make a long story short, no. There’s no green tea in green tea shots, but let’s be honest, who would want that? We all know most people aren’t trying to stay healthy by taking shots, and we definitely aren’t.

We know you’re curious as to what’s actually in a green tea shot, besides alcohol, obviously, so we’re here to give you a crash course on green tea shots as the experts.

WHERE DID GREEN TEA SHOTS COME FROM?

First, let’s get to the bottom of where they came from. While the origin of the green tea shot is unclear, people have made a few theories and speculations as to how the green tea shot may have came about.

  • It’s speculated that the green tea shot got its name due to its yellow-green color that resembled a cup of freshly brewed green tea. This could very much be true, but it doesn’t exactly give us the origin story about how it was invented.
  • One origin theory states that the shot may have been created as a marketing tactic by the Jameson Whiskey brand as most recipes call for Jameson’s Whiskey to be used. If that were true, we’d have to give them a pat on the back for one hell of a marketing strategy. Maybe we should make something – how about “Blue Tea Shottys”? Any takers? Yes? No? We’ll work on it.
  • The closest and most likely origin of the green tea shot is that it was invented in Madison, Wisconsin at some college bar in the 2000s. There aren’t any specific details as to how it came about, but it’s probably from the result of some bartenders experimenting or some tipsy college kids who were throwing ideas out. But one thing’s for sure, whoever made the shot had killer tastebuds.

HOW DID GREEN TEA SHOTS GET SO POPULAR?

For their amazing taste, obviously. But they first got popular in the 2010s in the college town of Madison, Wisconsin (which is where it’s believed to be invented) when a bunch of college kids started ordering ‘em. The color, taste, and simplicity was what drew people to the shots. Naturally, people wanted to try them, and as more people tried them, the more popular and widespread the got. And thus you have the story of how they gained popularity. With the rise of social media, that only amplified its fame for it to become the most popular bar shot in America.

SOO… WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN A GREEN TEA SHOT?

We know that there’s no green tea in ‘em, but you’re probably thinking what’s actually in that thing? Well, there are a few ingredients that are in a green tea shot no matter where you’re getting it from:

  • Whiskey (whether it’s Jameson Whiskey if you wanna join in on the marketing tactic, or American Barrel-aged Whiskey like ours)
  • Peach schnapps
  • Sweet & Sour mix
  • Lemon lime soda (or lemonade)

When you take all of these and combine them… BOOM! You have yourself a green tea shot. Now, you can give it a “shot” and make it yourself, or… you can just grab one of our delicious pre-made green tea shots at your local retailer or order them online through our store. It’s your choice (but we’d say the latter is the better option).

CONCLUSION

So, class, what have we learned? That there isn’t any green tea in green tea shots and that the origin of the green tea shot is a bit unclear. Either way, you don’t need to know where they came from to know that they’re delicious and one hell of a way to get the party started.
